About David Schwoebel
David Schwoebel, a composer of sacred music, is noted specifically for giving musical life to lyrics through sensitive melodies, well-crafted choral writing and rich-sounding accompaniments, Mr. Schwoebel’s 100+ published works have been acclaimed by directors, singers, instrumentalists and listeners alike, and have been included on the nationwide broadcasts of the ministries of Dr. Robert Schuler at The Crystal Cathedral, Garden Grove, CA, and Dr. James D. Kennedy at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church, Ft. Lauderdale, FL.
David grew up in Belleville, Illinois and by age 12, had already gained a reputation as a fine musician. With a Bachelor of Arts degree in Voice and Organ Performance from McKendree College in Lebanon, IL, and a Master of Church Music degree with an emphasis in composition from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, TX, Mr. Schwoebel’s diverse education and practical experience in church music ministry enables him to arrange and compose in multiple media including piano, organ, handbells, and instrumental, as well as choral music for all ages.
David’s greatest musical love is the keyboard where his intuitiveness shines on piano and organ. His orchestral arrangements bring soaring movements to old favorites as well as to newer, innovative music. His accapella arrangements are designed to use vocal choirs as an orchestra within themselves.
David has always had an admiration for Johann Sebastian Bach’s dedication to serving God through music. David pens the words ‘Soli Deo Gloria’ (for the glory of God alone) at the end of each of his compositions.
As Minister of Music at Derbyshire Baptist Church in Richmond, VA, David administrates and oversees a comprehensive music ministry of nine choral organizations, four handbell choirs and a 22-piece orchestra. The church is currently sponsoring a CD that will be published mid 2007, titled Soli Deo Gloria! The Music of David Schwoebel.
Even though he is a music minister of an active congregation, David continues to serve as a guest choral clinician throughout the United States, and regularly composes commissioned works for congregations, universities and community choruses.
The MICHELLE hymn tune included in the 1991 Baptist Hymnal is named after David’s wife, Michelle. He has also written a medley of three tunes for their three daughters, Brittany, Ashley and Courtney.
